Kick the Holidays off with these Two Healthy Holiday Mocktails

The concept of a healthy holiday cocktail may seem foreign; after all, traditional drinks like mulled wine, hot toddies and rum ‘n eggnog are not light on calories or alcohol. But if you re-redefine these seasonal treats as nutritious non-alcoholic drinks, they will keep you hydrated and satisfied so you’re less likely to over-indulge in the conventional variety.

Here are 2 mocktails that are healthful and “FRESHTIVE”!
 

1. Merry Berry Mock Mojito                   

Makes 2

  • 2 limes: juiced, and 1 Tablespoon zest
  • 15 mint leaves
  • 8 oz. Carbonated Spring Water (*not Tonic Water or Club Soda which have preservatives and/or sugar, salt)
  • 1 cup frozen blueberries or sliced frozen strawberries (& extra for garnish)
  • 1/2 cup Komucha tea, unflavoured (homemade or store-bought)
    Syrup (made ahead):
    • 1/2 cup honey or raw cane sugar
    • 3/4 cup water

      Directions

      Make syrup by combining honey or sugar and water in a small pot over medium heat. Heat until honey/sugar and water are well combined and just begin to boil, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and let stand for 30 minutes. Blend frozen blueberries or strawberries, syrup, kombucha, lime zest and lime juice in a blender until smooth.

      Pour into 2 glasses and add carbonated water and an ice cube (optional) to each. Garnish with mint sprigs and a few berries on top.
       
      2. Coconut-Cashew Rum Nog
      Makes 2


       1 can (400ml) coconut milk
       2 Tablespoons raw cane sugar
       1 cup raw cashews
       1/4 of a ripe avocado
       1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
       1/2 teaspoon artificial rum     flavouring (or 1/2 teaspoon   cinnamon)
       1/2 teaspoon freshly grated   nutmeg

       

      Directions
      Soak cashews in water at least 2 hours. Drain and rinse. In a saucepan, heat the coconut milk until it is warm, but not boiling. Add the sugar to dissolve. Remove from heat and cool. Place the cashews, sweetened coconut milk, avocado, vanilla and rum flavouring in a blender, and blend on high until very smooth. Add a little water if too thick. Store in the refrigerator and shake well before serving in 2 glasses. Grate fresh nutmeg on top. Serve warm or chilled.
